Those of you with excellent long-term memory may remember that Rosco failed his stereopsis test a couple of months ago. Well, I wanted to have that checked out before registering him for kindergarten (WHICH I NEED TO DO BY TUESDAY!!!!!!!!) so I took him to the optometrist today.

The good news is that he had no trouble with the stereopsis this time, so the one he took in the pediatrician’s office was a false fail. His vision is pretty good overall, however he is a smidge farsighted.

Yes. FARSIGHTED. The kid whose mother can’t find her glasses if she takes them off is a wee bit farsighted. It’s not significant enough to need correction right now and the optometrist thought that if he does start to develop myopia as he gets older it’s good to start off on this end of the scale.

Now, here’s what made the appointment oh-so-memorable. The optometrist wanted to put drops in Rosco’s eyes to dilate them. I don’t know why I thought he would be amenable to that – this is the same kid who goes semi-feral when I try to wash his face. The optometrist tried to get drops in a couple of times while Rosco was in the exam chair but Rosco kept swatting him off. This escalated to me having to hold Rosco across my lap and pin his hands down so the doctor could pry his eyes open and squeeze the drops in.

There was lots of screaming and a lot of thrashing around. I was so embarrassed that I actually started to giggle. (I didn’t realize I was a nervous giggler. Learn something new every day.)

Then Princess Em got pissed off because Rosco was on my lap, so she started screaming and trying to toss him off. The doctor suggested that he might be the next one to start crying.

His pupils are somewhat unevenly dilated two hours later so I suppose he managed to get some drops in.

Next time Scott’s taking him. I just can’t.
